Before they can register, midwifery students must have performed a number of episiotomies, yet the procedure occurs too rarely in practice for every student to get there. The XR Lab built a virtual birth in which students judge the need for the procedure, prepare their instruments, administer anaesthesia and make the incision, with a maternity nurse who responds to their voice and gives feedback as they go.

How do you rehearse an emergency you may never encounter, and one you have to get right the first time? After a delivery, the client begins to bleed heavily. Students work through the ABCDE-FG assessment, arrive at a diagnosis, call an ambulance and hand the patient over using ISBAR — with virtual characters that respond to speech and can carry out physical actions, so the care process stays intact without haptic hardware.

Systematic assessment and structured handover are procedures nursing students need to automate, and a written case study is a poor rehearsal for either. In this simulation a patient with COPD deteriorates while the student measures, interprets and calls the ward physician using ISBAR — with motion capture driving the laboured breathing and facial expression as oxygen takes effect.

Light pollution has quietly removed the real night sky from everyday experience. For a light art work by Diana Ramaekers, the XR Lab built a 3D world in which day turns to dusk and then to night, stars gathering along the horizon until the Milky Way appears as it can still be seen where no light reaches — shown as a projection in a church in Essen, Germany.
